ERWGC Members; One more Question:

In addition to the questions to which you were asked to respond on the survey monkey, please consider the following:  The ERGA Board is considering a temporary reduction in greens fees for the men's and women's groups in an effort to increase play. The reduction would be for a specified amount of time, with the expectation that the number of people playing on Tuesdays and Wednesdays would increase by a specified average  number.  If not, the temporary rates would be rescinded.

If the rate were to be reduced to approximately $50, including a cart, provided you were either a JC card holder or Encinitas resident, would you be more likely to play more often, and do you think it would entice former members to return?

I am also happy to report that the rumors about the JC card being limited to one purchase per year are not true!  You will continue to be able to purchase as many JC cards per year as you like, and Rod advises that additional benefits will be announced shortly.

SO: Please respond directly to me at COMcGurn@Gmail.com, prior to our next Board meeting, July 20th.  We hope you have or will also have responded to the survey monkey questionnaire by then.  We NEED this information in order to plan for the future.  Thanks a bunch, and keep hitting them straight!  Carolyn

Greetings, Fellow ERWGC Members,

I trust you have all seen the recent message that our member/guest tournament for July has been cancelled.  In the past we have had a great turn out and lots of fun and prizes for the Member/Guest.  Sadly, this year, we did not receive the minimum number of players required to sponsor the event.
We on the Board work hard to try to make your ERWGC golf experience a good one.  Frankly, we're stumped; and we really need your help!   It's no secret that the number of golfers on a regular Tuesday has fallen off from around 30 to around 10 to 12.  Unfortunately, we can't expect Encinitas Ranch to continue to hold tee times for us if we aren't filling them.
So once again, we are asking you to take a minute to open this survey (copy and paste to your browser if it doesn't open here) and let us know what you think.  There are only 6 questions, so it won't take more than a couple of minutes to complete, and you will be providing us with very valuable information as we determine how to approach 2011.  Please respond by July 11 at the latest so that we may discuss the results at our next Board Meeting.
Your responses are confidential, so please be honest and very specific.  If you would also like to discuss your input in more detail, please contact any member of the board for that conversation.  We are all trying to make the experience the best it can be for all of us!  Thank You, Carolyn

How Well Should You Be Playing?

Do you usually play a few strokes over your Course Handicap? Did you know that this is normal under the USGA Handicap System? Why does this occur?

Have you heard that as an average golfer that you should only be expected to play to your Course Handicap 25 percent of the time? That you should average three strokes higher than your Course Handicap? Out of 20 scores that you will only have one score that will be two strokes better than your Course Handicap?

The above is because the USGA Handicap System is based upon the Potential Ability of a player rather than the average of all of his scores. A player's Handicap Index reflects his potential because it is based upon his best scores posted for a given number of rounds, ideally the best 10 of his last 20 rounds. Since the USGA has his worst 10 scores tossed out, his Handicap Index reflects his best days.

My name is Mary Lou O'Keefe and this is my second year as SWEEPS Chair.  My duties as SWEEPS chair include creating the tournament schedule for the year, preparing the weekly SWEEPS participation sign in sheet, determining weekly flighting based on number of participants, reviewing weekly scores and determining winning points, and distributing this information to the club house, website, and North County Times.  On a quarterly basis, with concurrence from the Club President and Treasurer, I convert the points earned to dollar values, which are then posted ont he website.  The dollar values can be redeemed for Encinitas Ranch gift certificate, applied toward tournament play, or annual membership renewal.  Members should contact the Club Treasurer to redeem their SWEEPS accounts.

The SWEEPS are net-based and, therefore, are the equalizer for member play.  This means that all players start the day on equal footing - you don't have to have the lowest handicap to win SWEEPS points.  Be sure to sign up every week before you head out to play.  Also, now that we are on the GHIN handicap system, your personal handicap changes twice a month (1st and the 15th), so be sure to check the handicap sheet each time you sign up for SWEEPS - this will help in the final score verification.

I also handle another benefit to ERWGC members - the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) which are posted on the ERWGC website.  If you have questions that would be of interest to many players, please send them to me and I will draft the answer, review with the Board and then publish them on the website.   Actually, we have a lot of very valuable information on the website and I encourage you to check it frequently!!

Have a great time playing with the ERWGC.  If you are aware of other fun games that could be incorporated in our SWEEPS schedule, please let me know!

Mary Lou O'Keefe

Hi, there

My name is Connie Ellena and this is my second year as Secretary to the Encinitas Ranch Women's Golf Club.. My duties, as secretary, are to attend the Board Meetings and take minutes of the meeting. They are then approved by our President, Carolyn McGurn, before being sent to all Board Members.. The minutes are posted on our website.

I, also, am responsible for the "Chip-in, Birdie, Sandie" sheet each play date. This sheet is put out with the players sign in sheet. Members sign their name on the sheet before play and put a dollar in the red canister. After play, if you had a "chip-in, birdie or sandie, then you record it on the sheet under the appropriate column with the hole number that you got it on. At the end of each month I pay out monies collected, during that month, and put it in a small envelope, with your name on it, in the black box. Please make sure you check the box for your winnings.

We are very proud of our Ladies League and hope that
you will tell your friends and acquaintances to come and
join us.

I look forward to seeing you on the course.
"Swing that Thing"
Connie

SWEEPS

Below are the  basic requirements for SWEEPS participation.

1.  Sign the game sheet before you play
2.  Complete your scorecard, sign it, and have it attested. Cards missing these signatures will not be considered for SWEEPS
3.  Complete the SWEEPS scoring and record the results on the game sheet
4 .  Put one card for your group in the tournament box (middle box).  There must be a card in the box for your group to be considered as participating the SWEEPS for that week.

Thanks for paying attention to these details so your group will be eligible for SWEEPS points and I can fairly score the game.

Mary Lou

Cancellations

Ladies:  With the "iffy" weather and resulting cancellations we’ve been having, please exercise the following courtesies to make Tuesdays pleasant for all:

  • If you decide to cancel, please notify at least one other member of your group in addition to the Pro Shop, so that someone doesn't end up as a single;
  • If there have been a number of cancellations or no-shows (there should not be any no-shows - call the Pro Shop), please be flexible in agreeing to some group shuffling by the starter to facilitate the entire field; but,
  • Before doing too much shuffling, please make certain with the Pro Shop that there have not been last minute additions or changes made to the last pairing sheet sent out by Liisa.

To that end I will ask the guys at the desk to place a copy of their final pairing sheet on the desk, or somewhere obvious, so that we can all check to see who is supposed to be playing in each group.

Thank you all for your cooperation!  Carolyn

Tip of the week:

Move the Ball Forward in Your Stance (Towards your left foot for a right-handed golfer)
The notion of playing the ball off of your left heel is no longer valid. We want to hit the ball on the upswing, thus increasing launch angle and decreasing the ball's spin rate. In order to do this, we must move the ball forward in our stance. For some golfers, it will be enough to play the ball off of your big toe, while for others it may be necessary to move the ball all the way up so that it is positioned outside of your left foot. Experiment with different ball positions – but, whatever you do, move the ball forward in your stance!

Ringer Tournament 2010

I'd like to have some more Ringer players; there's room for all.  Just get $5.00 to me by cash or check (to me) and I'll count you in from the first of the year.

The definition of your Ringer score is the sum of your best score over the year on each hole.  That's your gross ringer score.  Your net ringer score is your gross score minus your December handicap.  I'll pay at least 1/3 of the field and have as many flights as number of competitors allows.

I'll want your group Ringer card in the Ringer box each week, signed by two in the group.

Thanks, Carol Hartwell (Ringer Chair).

SDCWGA

Each month, if you are registered, the SDCWGA will send you a report showing your scores and index.  Please review this report and make sure all is correct.  If any discrepancies, please contact your club handicap chair.

Weekly Tournaments (SWEEPS)

Each week (except for major and special tournaments) there is a different game.

1.The sign-up sheet and the monthly handicap report can be found in front of the posting machine.

2. Each week, enter your current handicap and name before you begin play.

3. When finished, sign your card, record your tournament game score on the sign-up sheet.

4. Be sure to also post your score that day before you leave the clubhouse

Meetings

There are four general meetings per year.  On those days, we have an 8:00 a.m. shot-gun start so that all players finish at the same time and we are able to meet immediately afterward.  ERWGC has a dedicated board who work throughout the year on your behalf.  They really need you to attend these meetings to share new information and provide feedback that will be helpful to the Board.

Pace of Play

Tip of the Week:
Leave the green immediately after completing the hole. Record scores on the next tee, but don't let scorekeeping keep you from being ready to tee off.

1. When playing cart path only holes, be sure to take enough clubs to play any shot you may need to play. Try taking one club more and one club less, along with the club you think you will need.

2. Play Ready Golf. Go directly to your ball. If you are riding in a cart, drop your passenger off and go to your ball. Be ready to make your shot when it is your turn to play and do not be afraid to shoot out of turn.

3. Line up your putt while others are putting. Also, finish your short putt if your not in someones line rather than marking and waiting.

4. At the restroom between holes 15 & 16, when finished, send one cart ahead to #16 to tee off. You don't need to wait for the whole group to get to the tee box before hitting your tee shot.

5. Park your carts at the back of the green closest to the next hole to save time.

6 . Watch other players hit, to help keep track everyones balls.

7 . Practice swings not only add to your physical exhaustion but are time consuming, try to limit them as few as possible.

8 . Players in the first cart should tee off first.

Chip-ins, Birdies and Sandies

If you'd like to play, remember to signup in the morning
before your round.

The price has changed! For $1 you will be entered into
all three games.

Please check to see if you have money to pick up!
Winnings paid at end of each month.
Leave your envelope in the back of the box after
removing your winnings.

On your score card, circle the hole on which you made your chip-in, sandy or birdie. When you finish your round, record the hole number of your accomplishment next to your name on the sign-up sheet. Winners will be paid at the end of each month.

A chip-in is any ball holed from off the green.

You can make a sandy by
1) making par or better after escaping from a bunker;
2) hitting out of a bunker and making one putt
(you do not have to make par); or
3) holing your shot out of a bunker.

To score a win in the birdie club you must score
one under par (or better).

If you have questions, refer to the committee chair.
